Troutdale Historical Society Plans Museum Round Robin
On Saturday, April 19, 2008 the Troutdale Historical
Society will be hosting the second Museum Round Robin.
The group will meet at Reynolds High School, 1698 SW
Cherry Park Rd in Troutdale (cross street is 257th)
at 8:45 and depart by bus at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
This tour will start at Phillip Foster Farm in Eagle
Creek. At the farm there is an 1860’s barn, an
1883 farmhouse, a replica store, blacksmith shop, covered
wagons, antique carriages and beautiful heritage gardens.
Philip Foster's 1847 farm was the first real civilization
the pioneers encountered after their 2,000 mile trek
west. Located on the Barlow Road, the Foster Farm hosted
an estimated 10,000 exhausted pioneers. The garden is
home to the oldest lilac in Oregon, carried by Mrs.
Foster on the sea voyage from Maine around Cape Horn.
From the farm, we will go to Oregon City to visit McLoughlin
House and Barclay House.
Dr. John McLoughlin was chief factor (superintendent)
of the British Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) based at Ft.
Vancouver on the Columbia River. The fur trade brought
the first permanent white settlers to the area. He had
purchased HBC's land claim at Willamette Falls (Oregon
City), and he and his family moved into his newly-built
mansion in 1846 after being forced to retire. He died
in this home in 1857.
Dr. Barclay came from Scotland to Fort Vancouver as
a Hudson's Bay Company physician in 1840. The Barclay
home, built in 1849, remained in the family until the
1930's, when it too was moved up the hill from the waterfront
to sit adjacent to the McLoughlin House. It was added
to the National Park System in 2003, along with the
McLoughlin House, as a unit of Fort Vancouver National
Historic Site.
Cost for the event is $15. This will be an all day event
so bring a sack lunch and join in the fun! For more
information or to sign up, please call the Troutdale
Historical Society at 503-661-2164.
